Canterbury North Roading Update

Specific Roading Issues

11 March 2010  SH16 Punganui Stream Bridge Overnight Closures

Upcoming works at the Punganui Stream Bridge upgrade project will require full road closures next week. This will involve closing the section of SH16 from Inland Road to approx 300 northeast of Punganui Bridge.

These closures are scheduled to be in place from 9pm until 6am, Sunday 14th through Thursday 18th March. Detour routes will be in place, but operators should make contact to find out what these routes are, and if they are suitable for overdimension and overweight loads.

For more info contact the project manager, Ashley Cooper of Brian Perry Civil on 027 654 5329

11 March 2010  SH25 Te Puru Bridge Restriction

At Te Puru township - north of Thames on SH25 half of the old bridge has been demolished to allow a new bridge to be constructed in stages replacing the old bridge. Traffic is currently running over the remaining half of the old bridge. On Monday this week 4 new beams were placed  to form part of the new bridge and because these are much higher than the old bridge they create a lane width restriction that may affect trucks and trailers with over-dimension loads.

The width currently available across the bridge is 3.5m which is the normal lane width on our State Highways.  It is expected that this situation will only continue till the end of April when traffic will be diverted onto the new half of the bridge.

10 March 2010  SH1 Taupo - Resealing Works at Night

Opus have advised of resealing works at various locations on SH1 in the Taupo area at night. These are changes to previously advised dates:

  • Wednesday 10 March: Bulli Point
  • Sunday 14 - Tuesday 16 March: Poihippi Rd - Huka Falls lookout

8 March 2010  SH1 Auckland Harbour Bridge - Police Escorts

This applies to all Northbound Loads from and including March 21st 2010 until further notice.

All "OVERSIZE" loads requiring a Police escort (phone *555) for NORTH BOUND TRAVEL are to wait in the bus lane opposite the Caltex Service Station in Fanshawe St. Please have consideration for buses requiring to uplift passengers from the adjacent stop. Fletcher Construction will be placing concrete barriers in the left lane of where we currently wait as a precursor to carrying out works associated with the new Vic-Park tunnel. DO NOT ENTER the Fanshawe St onramp under Vic-Park flyover without your Police escort!

South bound travel is not affected.

9 February 2010  SH3 & 4 Various Wanganui Construction Sites

Putiki Roundabout (SH3/4)

Transport though north and  south is currently good with no work on SH3. SH4 Anzac parade is being worked on with drainage being installed. The road width is generally ok for normal traffic and narrower transporters/ loads. For extra wide loads ie; houses in and out of SH4 / Wanganui East area, should use the southbound slip road which will necessitate some good traffic management if used during the daytime when heading into Wanganui East (One way)

B Bullock is the contractor, STMS is Ivan Bullock Ph. 027 2555723.

SH4 Anzac Parade

There is river bank reconstruction work adjacent to the town bridge, this is generally 2 lane but can be reduced to 1 lane at times during the day. This road works will accommodate approx. 8 metres outside normal work hours.

I D Loader is the contractor, STMS is Ian Loader Jnr. Ph. 06 3489034 bussiness hrs. Ask for Ians number.

Carlton Ave, SH3

If you are over 2.5 wide DO NOT GO THERE. This section of road from Liffiton St to Smithfield Rd is currently having major pipe laying down the full length of the road plus the new roundabout constructed, and will probably be restricted to normal width vehicles for quite some time.

Currently you cannot even get an empty 3.1 transporter through the proliferation of cones etc.  HEB is the main contractor with others. STMS contact is Nick on 027 2840397.

Use Heads Rd, Mosston Rd, Montgomery Rd. to and from SH3, and this will take approx 9m wide.

Big overweights should check with NZTA Wanganui for availability of this route. (Note: Montgomery Rd has quite a steep hill at the top end, if you prefer a flatter route, use Mosston Rd, Tayforth Rd, Rapanui Rd coming out adjacent to Westmere Service Stn. (BP). This will take approx 10.5m. Tayforth and Montgomery Rds both turn off Mosston Rd 50 yds apart.)

Carlton Ave / London St Roundabout

Work has started on this upgrade and at present has no difficulties as the contractors are widening Fitzherbert Ave / London St corner and are working clear of the roadway, London St now has a traffic island installed, currently without signs, there will be no significant width problem here as it is still wider than the road and signs etc at the bottom of St Johns Hill / Victoria Ave Intersection.

I D Loader is the contractor Ph. 06 3489034 bussiness hrs.

Our local eye in the sky (Pilot: Adrian Flett) will keep us posted on developments with all these projects on these important heavy haul routes

1 February 2010  SH1 Levin - Waiauti Bridge Replacement

GHD Ltd have advised of works to contruct a new bridge at Waiauti, some 14km south of Levin. Due to the tight nature of the construction site, work on both the new bridge and work to demolish the old bridge will be occurring at the same time. This will result in pavement and load width restrictions as one lane on each bridge will be used for a period of time and work equipment may be close to the roadway.

Due to this a notification process will be put in place for overwidth loads and some overweight loads to ensure that passage is available at the worksite. The exact work timetable is being formualted at present, but it is likely that some restrictions are likely to be commencing in around 2 weeks time.

Further information will be provided as it comes to hand.

1 February 2010  Otago SH6 Nevis Bluff Closures

The NZ Transport Agency is warning road users that they can expect delays from Monday 8 February 2010 as it carries out safety work on State Highway 6 at the Nevis Bluff, about midway between Cromwell and Queenstown.

NZTA says two areas of unstable rock have been assessed as posing a potential hazard to road users and is moving to stabilise these areas before they pose a greater hazard to road users. Because of the difficulty and unpredictable nature of the drilling and blasting work and for safety reasons, road closures can be expected from Monday to Friday throughout the course of the works. These are programmed to be complete by 19 March 2010.

There will be road openings on the hour every hour between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday to enable motorists to time their travel with a road opening. Between the hourly openings traffic will be cleared approximately every 20 minutes. While the delays should be mainly up to 20 minutes, there will be up to 1 hour closures during the course of the works to allow for blasting operations.

21 December 2009  SH1 Atiamuri Bridge - Traffic Restrictions

Members are advised of new traffic control instrastructure and signage that has been installed on the Atiamuri Bridge to slow down the speeds across the structure. The structural state of the bridge is defective and NZTA are trying to preserve the life of the bridge until a new one is built. The current 50 km/h speed limit is to be retained and they have installed centre road marker poles to slow down the traffic crossing the bridge.

Following queries made by the Association, NZTA have advised that these poles are designed to rebound and if necessary wide loads can straddle these to make their way over the bridge. They are 900mm high approaching the bridge and 600mm high on the bridge itself. Loads travelling on overweight permits are still banned.

The Association seeks the assistance of members to keep to the posted speed limit across the bridge of 50 km/h for heavy vehicles.

16 November 2009  Taupo: Crown Road Closure - Alternative Route

With the closure of Crown Road access from SH5, it is suggested that members use the following alternate route:

Travelling from Napier, continue down SH5, right onto SH1, right onto Spa Rd, straight onto Centennial Drive, left onto Broadlands Rd.

Members are urged to check this route when wishing to travel with loads higher than 5 metres.

9 November 2009  Balclutha Overdimension Route - Clydevale Bridge Weight Restriction

The Clydevale Bridge (#118) Allangrange Roadis on the overdimension bypass route for the main Balclutha bridge over the Clyde River on SH1. The Council has just advised the following:

1. The bridge posting will be at 50% Class 1 (23,000kg)

2. However the Council has now agreed that they can issue overweight permits to allow 100% class 1 depending on the truck configuration and loads.

4. The permits will have special conditions listed stating the speed limit, the need to drive in the centre of the bridge, and at least 30 m separation between vehicles.

5. They may be for a standard configuration or individual truck.

The Association would like to strongly reinforce to members that this concession to the industry needs to be respected, and compliance with all bridge crossing requirements and conditions is to be strictly adhered to. The Council is going to put in place checks and processes to ensure that the conditions are complied with.

This restriction is likely to be in place for at least 6 months.

Members need to make arrangements for permits to cross this bridge and these requests can be made through to Qutaiba Alani of MWH New Zealand Ltd (Ph 03 – 418 0479)

3 August 2009  SH35 Restrictions on Overweight Loads

NZTA advise of restrictions on overweight loads going across Busby's Hill on State Highway 35 between Tokomaru Bay and Mata Road due to the current instability of the road.

All Area Overweight Permit holders are advised that until further notice, no overweight loads are able to proceed between Mata Road and Tokomaru Bay on SH35 without obtaining specific approval. While the State Highway at Busby’s Hill is now open to all commercial vehicles, this restriction is necessary is ensure the continued security of this section of the highway.

Their geotechnical engineers are currently looking at ways to improve the stability of this area with a view to being able to lift this restriction. But they are unable to at this stage advise when this may be.

Any enquiries for travel along this road, please contact Gael Turner at NZTA Ph [06] 974 6500
