The Class 2 load pilot licence is the entry level for load piloting in NZ.

To first gain an understanding about the licence, you need to download the Pilot Guide book from here to read and digest it: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/load-pilot-driver-code/

Then there are two ways to gain a class 2 load pilot licence in NZ:

1. Be assessed against Unit Standard 1768 by an industry assessor

You will need to contact an assessor for this unit in order to be assessed for it. A list is available from the NZ Heavy Haulage Association.

2. Sit a computer test through Aspeq.

For the Aspeq option you need to book in for the class 2 pilot test here: https://nzta.aspeqexams.com/home

Just select exam schedule and then the specialisation is “Heavy Haulage”. You need to register and then you can book in test at a place close to you. The cost is $138 incl GST.

Aspeq have provided a user guide about how to register and book in for the test. View/Download User Guide

A video guide has also been produced that provides guidance about how the test will be conducted. View Video Guide

Note that while the test is "open book" you cannot take in the NZTA Course Guide Book - however one will be provided at the test venue.
